Abstract
This study will focus on the role of Polish airmen in the formation and growth of the Royal Pakistan Air Force (RPAF) during the early years (1948-1960). After the geopolitical turmoil of World War II and the Yalta Conference (1945), some 30-100 exiled Polish airmen who had possessed extensive combat experience and technical skills, entered into the contractual service with the fledgling State of Pakistan. This research paper examines the diverse contributions of these aviators to the development of Pakistan's air power capabilities and infrastructure through a qualitative analysis of archival sources, documentary evidence, and secondary literature. The study shows that Polish airmen played a key role in the establishment of the operational, training, maintenance, and air transport commands of the RPAF with the particular focus as how then Squadron Leader Wladyslaw Turowicz and the Polish contingent leader, stood as an influential figure who even influenced the space and missile programmes in Pakistan. The results show that despite their comparatively limited numbers and the geopolitical factors that obscured their achievements, these Polish aviators laid solid foundations on which, professional edifice of the Pakistan Air Force was erected. The research fills a major gap in the historiography of Pakistan-Poland strategic relations and adds to the general knowledge on the topic of post-colonial military capacity building in the early Cold War era.
